I lost everything material almost my sanity and very nearly the support of my family.

 

I no longer drink alcohol, because I don’t see the point of it, I understand that it will bring me nothing positive, it will change nothing for the better, alcohol will only change  my state of mind, and I’ve learnt the hard way that I’d rather keep control of that!

 

When I decided to stop drinking alcohol it was for reasons that were right for me, it had nothing to do with the health implications, the financial cost, and the emotional damage to me and those around me.

 

I decided to stop drinking alcohol because I wanted to change my life for the better, to live in reality, not live in fear of ‘what might be’ all of the time, something that I’d not done for almost five years and maybe not ever.

 

For me being alcoholic was a self inflicted ‘disease’, I was pouring the alcohol down my neck, it was my choice that I picked it up and drank it, never at any time was it forced on me, I don’t feel that my genetics are radically different from anyone else’s, it’s easy to get hooked on alcohol because it ‘works’ and it ‘works’ fast.

 

I tried programmes that invited me to admit that I was powerless over alcohol. Well even science will tell you that because it is a mind altering drug, anybody can become ‘powerless’, it just takes the ‘right’ set of circumstances, the ‘right’ mental state, and the ‘appropriate’ biology, and enough alcohol to affect your decision making.

 

I would ask how it is possible we will be guaranteed to retain control of our minds after we have introduced one of nature’s most powerful mind altering drugs, alcohol into our bodies

 

On occasion I was told that I had a disease, I was ill and it wasn’t my fault. Even if it wasn’t my fault it was my choice. I learnt to make different choices, ones that didn’t involve alcohol, my life changed, I was alive and gradually I began to sort out the very things that were driving me to drink alcohol.
